The funeral for Childersburg Assistant Chief Jim Looney was held in Sylacauga today with departments from all over the area in attendance. Below are a few pictures from the funeral.

Jim Looney Arrangements

The visitation for Childersburg Assistant Chief Jim Looney will be from 5:30pm - 9:00pm Thursday and the funeral will be at 1:00 pm Friday. Both will be at the Radney Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga. Burial to follow at the Childersburg City Cemetery.

JIMMY WAYNE "JIM" LOONEY

SYLACAUGA - Funeral Services for Mr. Jimmy Wayne (Jim) Looney, 46, will be Friday, April 24, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home with interment following at the Childersburg Cemetery. Lt. David Vick, Chaplain of the Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday, April 23, 2009 from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m.

Mr. Looney passed away April 21, 2009 at Coosa Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Looney served the citizens of Jefferson and Blount Counties with Hanks Ambulance and Suburban Ambulance. He diligently served the citizens of Talladega County for 23 years as Firefighter Paramedic at the City of Childersburg and as Paramedic with Sylacauga Ambulance Service. He rose through the ranks to achieve the position of Assistant Chief of Medical Operations at the Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department. Mr. Looney served on the Board of the Childersburg Housing Authority and various State Emergency Medical Committees.

Survivors include parents, Buddy and Margaret Looney of Childersburg; wife April Looney of Childersburg; three sons, Kyle Matthew Looney of Gainesville, FL, James Ian Looney of Weaver, AL and Nickolas Taylor Looney of Childersburg; brother Macy Sheldon Looney (Kris) of Pinson, AL, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Butch Gulledge, Randy Hodges, Jackie Harris, Dwayne Clubb, Jeff Ivey, Jeff Monroe, Jeff Little and Shane Caton. Honorary pallbears will be the members of the Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department.

Jim was dearly loved by his family, friends and coworkers and will be greatly missed by all.

2009 Cops on Top

"Cops on Top" of Walmart in Homewood

The Homewood Police will be working with Birmingham Police, but they won’t be investigating any criminals! Instead, for 34 hours straight, officers will sit on the roof at their local Walmart to raise money for Special Olympics. Other departments across the state will also be roof-sitting on Walmarts to participate in the “2009 Cops on Top” fundraiser.

Who: Homewood Police Department, who will be joined by Birmingham officers
When: Friday, April 24 at 5:30am until Saturday, April 25 at 4:00pm
Where: Walmart, 209 Lakeshore Parkway, Homewood, Alabama

Anyone wishing to contribute to “Cops on Top” is asked to go to one of the participating locations or you may donate to your favorite location by going to www.FirstGiving.com

Attorney General Troy King will be visiting each site on Friday April 24th to show his support of the Torch Run and Special Olympics.

Background:

The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 as a way to involve local law enforcement in the community and to support the Special Olympics. The Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is now part of an international movement and the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics. More that 85,000 officers around the world have carried the “Flame of Hope” across 35 countries.

Homewood Police Department recognized the importance of getting involved in the community and saw the need to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics and the athletes involved. The Homewood Police Department has organized the “2009 Cops on Top” event to promote the Law Enforcement Torch Run and to raise money for Special Olympics.

Childersburg Fire & Rescue

Childersburg Fire & Rescue is mourning the loss of Assistant Chief Jim Looney. Chief Looney, who had been in the Fire/EMS service for approximately 30 years passed away from health problems.

Information about the services for Chief Looney should be available later today. I'll post them as soon as I hear something.

God rest his soul and comfort his family. He will be missed.

Birmingham Fire & Rescue responded to an automobile fire at Wachovia Bank in Roebuck. Upon arrival, Engine 30 found a truck burning under the corner of the building and quickly extinguished the fire.

Fultondale Stampede 5K Run

Fultondale Fire & Rescue Service

The annual Fultondale Stampede 5K Run will be held June 20th, Starting line and Parking is at the Walkers Chapel Baptist Church, 1525 Briscoe Street, Fultondale. Registration begins at 7:00am, Run starts at 8:00am. Awards are presented, as well as drawings for prizes. Refreshments are served.

The 5K race course is U.S.A.T.F. Certified.

Pre-registration for the 5K is $12.00 and 1 canned good, day of the run, $15.00 and 1 canned good. All canned goods are given to needy in the area.

Registration for the Fun Run is $8.00.

Ball caps will be given out to the first 300 registered, Others will receive caps in 2 weeks.

All proceeds benefit the Fultondale Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service. This is our largest yearly fund raiser.

Registration forms may be picked up at the Trak Shak, Hibbetts Gardendale or Fultondale, or at Fultondale City Hall.
