Hueytown & Bessemer Fire Departments

Hueytown and Bessemer Fire Departments responded to a possible HazMat incident at the Hueytown Post Office early Tuesday. I was very impressed with how professionally both departments handled the potential threat. I was also impressed with how the ambulance services worked together to transport 23 patients from the scene.

Everyone involved should be proud of the flawless job they did while protecting the citizens of Hueytown.

HUEYTOWN, Ala. -- A liquid leaking from a package at the Hueytown Post Office around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday sent the call out to first responders from five agencies, blocked the area roads and caused the post office to be evacuated and closed to the public.

A seemingly harmless mail order coming from Georgia headed to a Hueytown resident sent nearly two dozen postal employees to the hospital. Most of the 23 employees complaining of nausea and breathing difficulties were sent to UAB Medical West.

Hazardous material crews suited up and went in to contain the spill. The materials in this case turned out to be non-life threatening.

Witnesses to Monday morning’s collision between a passenger car and fully-loaded fuel tanker truck in the Bethel community all agree on one fact — It was a miracle the young driver wasn’t killed.

Not only was Jason Tharp, 16, of Logan, not killed, witnesses said after his 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix was struck broadside on the passenger side by the Leader Transport truck from Holly Pond, Tharp crawled through his driver’s side window and ran to check on the driver of the truck. The truck had left the roadway and crashed through a soon-to-open beauty salon at the corner of U.S. Highway 278 West and County Road 1117.

William Hunt, 55, of Remlap, the driver of the 2002 Peterbilt which literally torpedoed the future location of Sherry’s Vision Hair Care, said by the time his truck came to a stop through the back wall of the building, the young man was up on his running board.

Engine 6 and Rescue 19 responded to a vehicle that rolled down off the shoulder in one of the curves on Sayreton Drive. Luckily, the land was being cleared and the girl didn't hit a tree.
