I-459 Woods Fire

Hoover Fire Department

From CBS42

Alabama's drought is causing problems for area yards and firefighters. Friday, dry conditions helped fuel a roadside fire in Hoover.

The fire started along I-459 South, sending smoke into the road, stopping traffic. One firefighter suffered a heat related illness while battling the blaze in the hot, dry conditions. The fire burned almost 10 acres, near Highway 150, shutting down three lanes of traffic. It took 35 men three hours to put it out. The flames reached the roadside and even burned tree tops.

"In the drought situation that we're in, everything is extremely dry had we had some wind this afternoon and the fire spread very, very rapidly," said Capt. Rick Patterson of the Hoover Fire Department. He believes either a cigarette butt or a vehicle's break material caused it.

Hoover Firefighters battled through unbearable heat to extinguish the fires and save nearby homes. Great work!
