Shelby Announces $286,962 for Center Point Fire Department

WASHINGTON, DC Friday, January 23, 2009-- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded $286,962 to Center Point Fire Department, located in Birmingham, Alabama. The funding is provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

"Each day, firefighters are on the front lines protecting our communities," said Shelby. "The Center Point Fire Department will use this funding to recruit and retain trained firefighters."

The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded these funds as a part of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program. SAFER is a part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which will distribute $500 million in direct federal assistance this year to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations nationwide.
