Shelby Announces $501,000 for Law Enforcement and Emergency Responders

From the Office of U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.)

WASHINGTON, DC Friday, September 26, 2008 -- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency will award $501,200 to 40 police, sheriff and fire departments across Alabama. This funding is awarded through the fiscal year 2008 Emergency Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP), which aims to enhance regional response capabilities by providing technology, equipment and training to law enforcement and emergency responders.

"Our law enforcement officers and our emergency responders are on the front lines each day to protect our communities and ensure the safety of our neighbors," said Shelby. "For this reason, it is critical that they have the resources necessary to do their jobs. This funding provides equipment and technology that are essential to our law enforcement officers and emergency responders."

CEDAP provides equipment in five categories: extrication devices; thermal imaging, night vision and video surveillance tools; chemical,
biological and radiological detection tools; information technology and risk management tools; and vehicle tracking tools.
