Pelham police officer killed in late night shooting

BIRMINGHAM, AL(WBRC)- A Pelham police officer was shot and killed while on duty on Thursday night.

The shooting happened around 12:00 a.m. Friday on I65 North between Exits 242 and 243.

The officer was taken by ambulance to UAB hospital with a police escort. The officer's name has not been released.

A white male has been taken into custody and will be named once formal charges have been filed.

Police say the suspect drove away erratically and dumped his gold Acura in the Inglenook community. He was caught by police in Hoover at exit 262 on U.S. 31 while in a truck.

There was a second person taken in for questioning, but it is currently unclear what their role has been.

Pelham Police Officer Shot and Killed

Pelham Police are mourning the loss of one of their own after a routine traffic stop turns deadly early Friday morning. Officials are not yet releasing the name of the officer. A suspect is in custody. I-65 is now reopened to traffic. This is what the Pelham Police Department's press release reads:

"On Thursday, Dec 3, at 2350 hours, a Pelham Police Officer was shot and fatally wounded during a traffic stop on I-65 in Pelham. The Officer's name will be withheld until all relatives have been notified. The incident is being investigated as a Murder of a Police Officer. A white male is in custody in connection to the death. The individual will be named once the formal charges have been filed. The investigation continues at this time and additional information will be released when appropriate to the investigation. The Pelham Police Department would like to thank all surrounding City, County, State and Federal Agencies who assisted in this investigation. The fine men and women of the Pelham Police Department request your support and prayers for the family of our fallen Officer."

Pelham Police Officer Killed Overnight

Pelham, Ala. - A Pelham police officer has died after being shot overnight.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was conducting a traffic stop along the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near milemarker 243. The highway was shut down in both directions for several hours and remained close at the start of morning rush-hour.

Authorities removed the officer's patrol car from the side of the highway around 6:20 a.m. Friday.

Hoover Police took two people into custody in connection with the shooting around 1:30 Friday morning. Authorities also found a suspect vehicle, a silver Acura TL, near 43rd Avenue North and Inglenook Street in Birmingham.

Pelham police say the white male taken into custody will be identified after formal charges have been fired. Right now the shooting is being investigated as a murder of a police officer.

Lifesaver helicopter had been dispatched to the shooting scene in Pelham moments after the gunfire, but the officer was taken by ambulance to UAB hospital with a police escort. Authorities confirmed shortly after 6:00 a.m. that the officer had died.

Right now, there is no word on the nature of the traffic stop that led to the shooting. The traffic stop took place in a stretch of highway that is undergoing major construction.

This man is my brother-in-law. He was the most loving, kind and funny person I know. His family would do anything to have him back. Please respect his service to the Pelham community by praying for his family. Thank you.
