Shelby Announces Nearly $2 Million for Alabama’s First Responders

WASHINGTON, DC Friday, November 21, 2008-- U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced that the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency will release $1,911,349 to local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations in the state of Alabama.
“Firefighters are in the field everyday protecting our citizens,” said Shelby. “We must ensure that our local emergency responders have the resources to fully protect our communities. Our fire departments will use this important grant to fund operations and safety programs and purchase much needed vehicles.”
The funding is provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program (AFGP), which will distribute $500 million in direct federal assistance this year to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations nationwide.

I am a firefighter with Valley Grande Volunteer Fire and we never get any money. We have applied the last few years and get nothing. We are NIMS compliant, very active, but can't get any money. What are we doing wrong? We need so much, so very sad. I am glad for the departments that got funding, especially Maplesville. Oh well, maybe next year.
Not sure f it helps but alot of the departments getting grans are using a grant writer there is a guy Jeff Monroe who owns the fire rescue help group they are in roanoke I think. he has a lot of successs getting grants for departments or giving insight to why they were denied. Hope this helps.

Just as the other two posters commented on, its all in your grant application. A grant writer can be the most valuable tool you can get. To make it through the grant process in AFG, your application first has to make it through the computer, which means you have to meet all these certain criterias in order for the computer to accept it. After that it goes to a peer review, which is comprised of various members of the grant commitee, which i believe are board members/fire cheifs etc from varied fire departments across the country.
We have applied many years in a row, and recently were awarded back to back tankers in the 06 and 07 grant years. Alot of these awards came from the advice of grant writers helping us figure out what we did wrong.
