Birmingham Fire & Rescue
This set of pictures is from a house fire which occurred at 504 28th Street North in the late 1980's... approximately 1985-1987. The fire was so large, and the houses so close, that the house next-door caught on fire.
Units on the scene included:

• 1's Truck
• Car 51
LT. Tommy Hale, from Rescue 15, can been seen in two of these pictures. LT. Hale lost his life in the line of duty, at the age of 40, while fighting a woods fire in 1988. He was a great guy.

Ohh the memories..

I did my field internship for Paramedic at 15 while Lt. Hale was there. I was about 18 at the time; young, bright eyed and an easy target. At dinner one night those knuckleheads, when I asked where to sit, put me in Lt. Hale's seat. He came in and just stood over me staring at me so I finally asked if something was wrong to which Tommy replied "Boy they done made you **** up" and everybody had a good laugh. I also remember Lt. Hale helping out when I was an Explorer Scout with BFRS when we went there to detail a reserve rescue for the Scout Expo. He was a great help to us in whatever we needed. I still remember when he passed. I hated hearing that.
