BFRS : 12 Patient MVA

Birmingham Fire & Rescue

Seven (7) Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service rescue units were dispatched to an MVA with 12 patients injured, the majority of them children. Units responding were Engine 19, Engine 12, Rescue 12, Rescue 8, Rescue 27, Rescue 1, Rescue 6, Rescue 2, Rescue 13, EMS 4 and Battalion 3.

I was very impressed with how BFRS was able to get all the required assets on the scene so quickly. Not only that, they handled the stress of a mass casualty incident with a high degree of professionalism and organization.

Birmingham News:

12 hospitalized after van crash:

Twelve people were taken to area hospitals after a passenger van and an SUV collided Monday at 11:30 a.m.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Capt. C.W. Mardis said the Hillcrest Hospital van was carrying two adults and seven teenagers when it collided with an SUV carrying two women and an infant. The accident happened near the intersection of Kimberly Avenue and Higdon Road, just off of Oporto-Madrid Boulevard. Mardis said the infant riding in the SUV was perhaps the most seriously injured of the victims.

Engine 19 was the first unit on the scene. The two vehicles involved in the wreck were the cream colored van on the left side of the picture and the black Jeep on the far right...
